The mineral production from mining and quarrying sector in January 2005 recorded a growth of 1.9 per cent as compared to that of the corresponding month of previous year. The mineral sector has shown a growth of 4.6 per cent during the first ten months of the current financial year as compared to the same period of last fiscal.
The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic & minor minerals) in the country during the month was Rs.6,080 crore. The contribution of coal was the highest at Rs. 2,516 crore (41 per cent). Next in the order of importance were : petroleum (crude) Rs.1,623 crore, natural gas (utilised) Rs.782 crore, iron ore Rs.540 crore, lignite Rs. 192 crore and limestone Rs.143 crore. These six minerals together contributed about 95 per cent of the total value of mineral production in January 2005.
Production levels of important minerals in the month were : coal 360 lakh tonnes, lignite 29 lakh tonnes, natural gas (utilized) 2,698 million cu. m., petroleum (crude) 29 lakh tonnes, bauxite 1,165 thousand tonnes, chromite 325 thousand tonnes, copper conc. 14 thousand tonnes, gold 258 kg., iron ore 130 lakh tonnes, lead conc. 7 thousand tonnes, manganese ore 207 thousand tonnes, zinc conc. 57 thousand tonnes, apatite & phosphorite 118 thousand tonnes, dolomite 339 thousand tonnes, limestone 141 lakh tonnes and magnesite 35 thousand tonnes.
The output of lignite during the month increased by 12.3 per cent, copper conc. 4.9 per cent, bauxite and limestone 3.2 per cent each, zinc conc. 1.4 per cent, petroleum (crude) 1.1 per cent and natural gas (utilized) 0.5 per cent. However, the output of dolomite decreased by 20.4 per cent, manganese ore 16.1 per cent, magnesite 5.9 per cent, iron ore 4.7 per cent, chromite 2.6 per cent, apatite & phosphorite 2.5 per cent, lead conc. 2.4 per cent, coal 1.5 per cent and gold 0.8 per cent.
