The Tenth Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Inter-State Council was held here today. It was chaired by the Home Minister, Shri Shivraj Patil and was attended by Union Cabinet Ministers of Law and Justice; Shipping, Road Transport & Highways; Information & Technology; Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions and the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.
The Committee considered the blue print of action plan on good governance, disaster management and implementation of the decisions taken by the Inter-State Council. By and large, the Ministers and the Chief Ministers agreed to the road map prepared for improving upon the same at all levels. They made very valuable suggestions based on their experiences in their respective areas and States. They were all for improving the legislative, executive and judicial activities for introducing modern technologies in governance and to reduce the time and cost in producing the desired results.
The suggestions made by them will be considered at the Inter-State Council meeting and the decisions taken will be circulated to all the Ministries in the Government of India and the State Governments for taking appropriate action.
At all levels, good governance is being impressed upon and efforts are being made to provide a government which is transparent, effective, economic, responsive, responsible, modern in its approach and capable of facing the challenges of the future.
The members of the Standing Committee unanimously recommended that there is an immediate need to set up a National Centre for Good Governance in the Capital where the best practices of good governance could be showcased and opportunity provided to all the States to adopt them. It was felt that the Centre should be of international standards and become a world-class institution. The Union Government shall consider the recommendation.
