As against the existing demand of more than 150 Million Metric Standard Cubic Meters Per Day (MMSCMD), the total availability of gas is only about 80 MMSCMD. In order to meet the existing and projected shortfall in the supply of gas, initiatives have been taken for the import of natural gas in the form of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). M/s Petronet LNG Limited (PLL)s 5 Million Metric Tonne Per Annum (MMTPA) LNG import terminal in Dahej has been commissioned in the year 2004-05. PLL have imported 2.5 MMTPA LNG during 2004-05.
The PLL Board have also approved the setting up of a 2.5 MMTPA LNG terminal at Kochi, Kerala projected for commissioning in the year 2008-09. M/s Shells 2.5 MMTPA LNG terminal at Hazira, Gujarat is scheduled to be commissioned during 2005-06. The proposals for setting up LNG terminals at Ennore in Tamil Nadu and Mangalore in Karnataka are at the initial stages. The estimated cost of setting up a green field LNG terminal of 5 MMTPA capacity is about Rs.2,700 crore.
This was stated by the Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Panchayati Raj Shri Mani Shankar Aiyar, in the Lok Sabha in a written reply today.
