The total production of Lignite during February 2005 by the Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited (NLC), a public sector unit of the Ministry of Coal has been estimated at 20.01 lakh tonnes which is 11.17 per cent more than the target of 18 lakh tonnes and 13.18 per cent more than the production of 17.68 lakh tonnes during the same month last year. The company during the month generated 1549.30 million units of power, 17.46 per cent more than the target and 21.48 per cent more than 1275.33 million units produced in February last year. It exported 1328.74 million units during the month, against a target of 1,097 million units.

Geological reserves of lignite in the country have been estimated at around 35,636 million tonnes (MT). Out of the above 4,150 MT spread over 480 sq. km. is in the Neyveli Lignite fields in Cuddalore District of which around 2,360 MT have been proved.
