jute and fibre textiles record highest growth of 59.1% in january

As many as 14 of the 17 two-digit (Industrial classification) industry groups showed positive growth during January compared to the same month, last year. Among these, Jute and other vegetable fibre textiles except cotton, registered the highest growth of 59.1 per cent, followed by textile products including wearing Apparels 30.8 per cent and other Manufacturing industries 17.9 per cent. However, Wood and Wood products and Furniture and Fixtures showed a negative growth of 16.7 per cent followed by a decline of 2.9 per cent in rubber, plastic, petroleum and coal products. Wool, silk and man- made fibre textiles also went down by 0.8 per cent during the month.

As already stated by the CSO of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the indices of Industrial Production for Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors recorded growths of 1.9 per cent, 9.3 per cent and 2.3 per cent respectively, compared to January 2004. While the Index of Industrial Production (Base 1993-94) for January 2005 rose by 8 per cent, the cumulative growth during April-January 2004-05 ended with an over all increase of 8.4 per cent in the General Index.

As per use-based classification, the growth in this January was 5.3 per cent higher in Basic goods, 10.6 per cent in Capital goods and 1.8 per cent in Intermediate goods in comparison with the previous January. The Consumer durables and consumer non-durables recorded growths of 13.2 per cent and 15.6 per cent, with the over all growth in the consumer goods being 15.1 per cent.
