Government is committed to make the following interventions in order to improve Inland Water Transport (IWT) infrastructure:
(i) Making the existing National Waterways fully functional by providing requisite infrastructure (terminals, navigational aids etc.).
(ii) Engaging States in IWT infrastructure development through liberal Centrally Sponsored Scheme.
(iii) Assisting IWT Operators in acquiring suitable vessels through Vessel Building Subsidy Scheme; and
(iv) Encouraging private sector participation and joint ventures between IWAI and private sector.
The programme of action finalised in this regard include:
(i) Development of infrastructural facilities on the existing National Waterways to make them fully functional during tenth plan.
(ii) To put in place a package for modal shifts from rail and road to IWT mode, during 2005-06.
(iii) To encourage State to promote inland water transportation through Centrally sponsored Scheme during 10th and 11th plan.
(iv) Encouraging Public-Private partnership for project development/implementation of IWT projects during 10th plan.
(v) Increasing the number of vessels through (i) vessel leasing and (ii) vessel building subsidy scheme during 10th and 11th plan.
