improvement in goods transportation

Thursday, March 17, 2005

One of the stated objectives of the Tenth Five Year Plan was to increase capacity on the High Density Network, improve throughput and increasing average speed of the goods train. For this purpose, a special purpose vehicle, the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited was set up to execute the works of strengthening of the Golden Quadrilateral in order to increase capacity, throughput and average speed of the goods train in a period of five years. The Railways have planned to increase the speed of the goods trains upto 100 Kilometre Per Hour (KMPH) on the Golden Quadrilateral and its diagonals.

Since the amount of traffic carried is dependent on a number of factors, it is not possible to calculate the quantity of goods that are likely to be carried as a result of increased speed of goods trains. However, it has been planned to achieve an originating freight loading of 776 Million Tonnes by the year 2009-2010.

This was stated by the Minister of State for Railways, Shri R. Velu in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
