LOK SABHA


The Telecom Sector, during the last three years commencing 2001-02, has registered a growth rate of 28.65 per cent. This was stated by Dr. Shakeel Ahmad, Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology today in the Lok Sabha in a reply to the question by Smt. Jayaprada and Dr. Chinta Mohan. The Minister further informed the House that the investment made by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) during the last three years as follows:

In addition, a substantial amount of investment is being made by the private sector also to meet the increasing demand for telecom services in the country.

Dr. Ahmad further stated that employment is generated in the telecom sector through Public Call Offices, Village Public Telephones and also through the general programme of providing telecom infrastructure like laying of cables, construction of telecom buildings, erection of towers and manufacturing of telecom equipment, etc.
