foodgrains to bpl people

Friday, March 11, 2005

During 2004-05 (upto January, 2005) the total quantity of foodgrains allocated for distribution by various States/UTs is 227.8 lakh tonnes for BPL families including Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families.

Against the above allocation a quantity of 183.90 lakh tonnes of foodgrains has been lifted by various States/UTs upto January, 2005 for distribution to the BPL population (including AAY).

Allocation of foodgrains to all the States/UTs under TPDS is made on the basis of poverty estimates of Planning Commission for the year 1993-94 updated on the population projections of the Registrar General as on March 1, 2000. As per these estimates the number of BPL families in the country is 6.52 crore scattered all over the country. As against 6.52 crore BPL households, distinctive ration cards have been issued by various States/UTs to 8.24 crore BPL households. The allocation of foodgrains to each State/UT depends upon the number of BPL families estimated for that State/UT as per estimates of Planning Commission or the number of ration cards issued by that State/UT, whichever is less, at the prescribed scale of 35 kg per family per month.

This information was given in Rajya Sabha today by the Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Dr. Akhilesh Prasad Singh in a written reply to a question of Smt. Maya Singh.
