The first course for the member countries of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral, Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), being organized in the area of Multi Model Transport, is scheduled to be held at Vadodara from 21st March to 2nd April, 2005. The course is being held in pursuance of the decision taken at the first meeting of the Railway Chief Executive Officers of BIMSTEC countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand) held here last year. The Course has two components Academic at Railway Staff College, Vadodara from 21st to 26th March, 2005 and Field training by Container Corporation of India from 27th March to 2nd April, 2005. Four participants each from Sri Lanka, Thailand and Bangladesh; two from Myanmar and one from Bhutan are likely to attend the course which is being organized by the Asian Institute of Transport Management, New Delhi. Five participants from India would also join the course. The course will be inaugurated by Shri Sumant Chak, Additional Member, Railway Board, Ministry of Railways on 21st March, 2005 at Railway Staff College, Vadodara.
Indias membership of BIMSTEC is an important articulation of the Governments look East policy. During the meeting of Railway Chief Executive Officers of BIMSTEC countries held in New Delhi in September, 2004, the Indian Railways have offered to train the Railway personnel from the Member countries free of cost.
