The Government of India recently introduced the concept of progressive mine closure plan and final mine closure plan to ensure recommissioning, reclamation and rehabilitation measures in a mine or part thereof after cessation of mining, for restoration of the affected areas to the extent feasible. As per information available with Indian Bureau of Mines, 79 mines in 17 States have been exhausted, 1029.35 hectare of land has been degraded and 454 hectare of land has been reclaimed.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
