Examinations invariably cause stress and fear among students and parents. The Joint Entrance Examination of IITs and Public Examinations at the end of Class X and XII conducted by various Boards also cause ‘High Stress Level’ among students.

In order to deliberate on the issue of examinations stress and fear, a meeting was held here today under the chairmanship of Shri Arjun Singh, the Hon’ble Minister of HRD. Leading educationists, Head of the Institution and Principals of some reputed schools deliberated on the issue in the meeting. In the meeting it was unanimously accepted that there must be systematic reforms to eliminate exam-related stress and fear. Based on the detailed deliberations in the CBSE, NCERT and other forums a policy framework will be prepared and put up for consideration in the forthcoming meeting of the CABE. These reforms may be introduced before the 2006 examinations.

Important suggestions which emerged during the meeting are ensuring that the students would not have to travel long distances to reach the examination centre, discouragement of pre-Board Exams, introduction of counseling as a regular activity to remove the stress built-up at the time of examinations, admission to primary schools based on the lottery system, flexibility in the duration of exams to reduce emphasize on speed etc. However, it was cautioned that premier institutions like IITs and IIMs are the world class institutions in this country and their reputation should not be diluted to any process.
