Thursday, March 10, 2005

At the time of Government approval of Commonwealth Games Bid in the year 2003, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had projected an expenditure of Rs.399.05 crores. Besides, Government of NCT of Delhi has projected cost of construction of Games Village at Rs.186.00 crores and Rs.32.50 crores for construction of indoor and outdoor stadium in the Yamuna Sports Complex and for upgradation of existing infrastructure of the Delhi Development Authority. However, these estimates are further likely to be revised upwards. Again, the existing Sports Infrastructure of Sports Authority of India, Delhi Development Authority, NDMC being used as the main venues would require major renovation and upgradation. IOA while submitting the proposal to Government had, on the basis of a consultant’s assessment, projected revenue generation of 100 Million US Dollars. The Government of India has undertaken to meet the shortfall between the revenue and expenditure.

The Games Village for the Games is proposed to be developed by Delhi Development Authority on approximately 40 hectares of land. The other complexes are proposed to be constructed within the existing DDA sports complexes except in one case where some additional area adjacent to it will be required.

As per the information received from IOA, the President, Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), in his communication sent to Common Wealth Games Associations (CGAs) of 72 participating countries, have shown satisfaction over arrangements being made for the Games.

About 8000 sportspersons and officials etc from all the 72 members countries of Commonwealth Games Federation are expected to participate in these Games.

This information was given by Shri Sunil Dutt, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today.
