eminent economist prof. jagdish bhagwati to receive `pravasi bhartiya samman’ tomorrow

Internationally renowned Economist and a former Professor of International Trade at Delhi School of Economics, Prof. Jagdish Bhagwati will be honoured by the External Affairs Minister, Shri K. Natwar Singh with the ‘Pravasi Bhartiya Samman- 2005’ at a ceremony in Vigyan Bhawan here, tomorrow. The Minister of State (I/C) for Overseas Indian Affairs, Shri Jagdish Tytler will preside over the function.

Prof. Jagdish Bhagwati, who is presently University Professor at Columbia University and senior fellow in International Economics at the Council of Foreign Relations, USA. He is one of the fifteen eminent persons who were selected for the prestigious ‘Pravasi Bhartiya Samman Awards-2005’ given by the President,. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam at the ‘Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas’ celebrations in Mumbai last month. However, due to some pre-engagements Sh. Bhagwati could not attend the celebrations at that time.

Professor Bhagwati has published more than three hundred articles and fifty volumes and also writes frequently for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Financial Times, as well as reviews for The New Republic and The Times Literary Supplement. Professor Bhagwati is described as the most creative international trade theorist of his generation and is a leader in the fight for freer trade. His most recent book, In Defense of Globalization (Oxford, 2004), was published and has attracted worldwide acclaim. He is recognized for his immense contribution to economic thought and for enhancing the understanding of India through his academic work.

Prof. Bhagwati had a distinguished career. He was Economic Policy Adviser to the Director General, GATT (1991-93) and also served as Special Adviser to the UN on Globalisation and External Adviser to the Director General, WTO. Five volumes of his scientific writings and two of his public essays have been published by MIT press.
