The national Youth Policy provides that educational curriculum in schools may include health issues, including reproductive health, HIV-AIDS and population issues. To check substance abuse, Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and HIV/AIDS, the policy stressed the need for proper education and awareness about reproductive health issues, including safe sexual behaviour.

A Committee for preparation of draft National Plan of Action under the National Youth Policy has been constituted under the Chairpersonship of Secretary, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

Thirty States and Union Territories are implementing a project entitled ‘National Population Education Project’(NPEP) which aims at introduction of adolescence education in schools. The project has three major components (a) Process of Growing Up (b) HIV/AIDS and (c) Drug abuse.

A pilot project “Educational Interventions in Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual health” in secondary and senior secondary classes, so as to ensure integration of content, process and evaluation process of curriculum, is being implemented kin Mizoram, Manipur, Marnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Uttranchal. HIV/AIDS education is an important component of this project.
