duncans industries limited to resume production of urea

Kanpur based Urea Manufacturing Unit, Duncans Industries Ltd. will resume production of urea from June, 2005. The operations at the fertilizer unit of Duncans Industries Limited (DIL) were suspended in March, 2002 due to financial distress faced by the company. The workforce (nearly 1300 permanent workmen) had been laid-off in July 2002 and continues to remain so till date. This was announced by the Minister of Chemicals & Fertilizers and Steel, Shri Ram Vilas Paswan after a meeting with the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Sriprakash Jaiswal and senior officials of the Department of Fertilizers, here today. Shri S.N.P.N. Sinha, Secretary, Department of Fertilizers was also present in the meeting.

Kanpur based Urea Manufacturing Unit has an installed capacity of 7.22 lakh tones per annum. To support the re-start of DIL operations, Kanpur Electricity Supply Company (KESCO) has arranged for a new 160 MVA transformer, which has been received at site on 21st March, 2005. It is hoped that power to DIL will be restored by 15th April, 2005 and it is expected that full production from DIL unit would be available in the first week of June, 2005.

Shri Paswan said that the Government was committed to protect interest of farmers and ensure sufficient supply of fertilizers to boost agriculture production in the country. He said that subsidy and other facilities would be provided to fertilizer manufacturing units.
