The 17th meeting of the Coordination Centre headed by the Union Home Secretary was held here today to review and coordinate the steps being taken by the naxal affected States to effectively counter the menace of naxalism. The meeting was attended by the Chief Secretaries and Directors General of Police of the affected States and the senior officers of the Central Government.
A detailed review was made of the measures taken/planned by each of the naxal affected States. There was a consensus that the menace of naxalism has to be tackled simultaneously in both security and development fronts.
It was noted that the States have initiated action to achieve and facilitate better coordination among themselves and have also undertaken need based joint operations across State boundaries.
The need to mount a concerted police action and intelligence driven anti-naxalite operations was emphasized and the States were asked to further intensify such operations to deal with the problem while keeping the door open for peace dialogue with naxal outfits willing to abjure violence.
During the deliberations, it was brought out that in some of the States, there has been a great deal of local resistance against the menace of naxalism. The States were advised to encourage local resistance and constitute Village Defence Committees so as to put sustained pressure on the naxalites.
The States were also asked to regularly monitor and ensure full utilization of funds being given by the Central Government under the Police Modernization (PM) Scheme, Security Related Expenditure (SRE) Scheme, Backward Districts Initiative (BDI) and PMGSY to accelerate the pace of socio-economic infrastructure and development in the naxalite affected areas.
