The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for introduction of the Manipur University Bill, 2005 in the current session of Parliament and bringing of the Manipur University, along with the College of Technology, Imphal, within the ambit of Central Government funding.
The proposed Manipur University would broadly function on the pattern of the existing Central Universities. The existing College of Technology, Imphal would be maintained by the Manipur University after its conversion into a Central University. The Manipur University, along with the College of Technology, Imphal would be funded through the University Grants Commission, like other Central Universities. The financial requirement of the University is estimated at Rs.49 crore (non-recurring – to provide for the necessary infrastructure) spread over a period of three years, and Rs.11 crore per annum (recurring).
This decision would ensure accelerated development of Manipur University to minimise the imbalance in educational facilities available in the North Eastern Region.
