compensation to accident victims

Railway Claims Tribunal (RCT) is a judicial body which disposes the cases. However, delay in disposal of cases is mainly due to the inability of the claimants to produce evidence in time. Total number of train accident cases pending as on 31.12.2004 are as follows: -

RCT (Procedure) Rules have been amended for speedy settlement of claims filed RCT. The amendments provide for: -

(i) Facility for the claimant to file the claim for accident cases at a station where the claimant normally resides, originating station, and destination station as against only at place of occurrence earlier.

(ii) RCT to pronounce an order with in 21 days after final hearing.

Administrative measures in regard to expeditious settlement of accident cases: -

(i) An accident cell has been set up under the Chief Claims Officer, which monitors all cases of death, injury for providing relief.

(ii) After the decree has been passed, payment of compensation is made at the earliest.

The above information was given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri R. Velu, in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today.
