Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Anbumani Ramdoss today had a personal interaction for over two hours with the Faculty Members of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. This was the first ever interaction the President of the Institute has had with all the 500 Faculty Members since its inception. During the discussion, the Minister desired to know the views of the Faculty Members regarding the working atmosphere and the reason for the sudden suicides in the Institute. The Faculty Members frankly told the Minister about the constraints that they are facing in the Institute including shortage of staff in many departments, shortage of resources in the form of equipment and also heavy patient load. They said that although the Institute was conceived as a Research Institution, it was being treated as an ordinary Hospital which added to the patient load.
Responding to the views expressed by the Faculty Members, the Minister said that all their grievances had been noted and he will look into the matter sympathetically. He told the Faculty that he has set up a Committee to be headed by the Director General of Health Services to look into the facilities available in the Institute and suggest remedial measures. The Minister also said that they are thinking of a Mega Project for expanding the Departments in AIIMS. He also told the Members that a separate Human Resource Department will be set up for faculties, students and workers to look into their development needs and every staff and faculty of AIIMS will have to go through this Department once in every six months. He said that a separate trauma centre as well as maternity and child centre and Geriatric Department will also be set up soon.
