Parliaments Standing Committee on Food Processing Industries has recommended the setting up of an integrated cold chain to preserve food from farm to the market. In its latest report to the Lok Sabha the Committee felt that the integrated cold chain facilities would serve as the lifeline of fresh food. Hence they need utmost attention. It has urged the Government to implement the suggestion at the earliest.
The Committee has suggested to the Ministry of Food Processing Industries to take all essential measures in cooperation with the concerned ministries to improve the roads leading from the farms to the urban market areas to save the perishable produce. It has recommended to the Government to provide refrigerated transportation by rail and other modes of surface transport to preserve perishable food items from remote locations to major markets. This would help the growers get remunerative prices and the consumer fresh food items.
