cauvery water dispute

Monday, March 14, 2005

Use and development of Cauvery Waters were regulated by agreements of 1892 and 1924 between the erstwhile Princely State of Mysore and province of Madras. The 1924 Agreement became open for review in the light of experience gained and further possibility of extension of irrigation etc. at the end of 50 years. For more than two decades, sharing of Cauvery Waters among the basin States were under discussion/negotiations bilaterally between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and with the mediation of Centre, but no solution has emerged. The Government of Tamil Nadu made a formal request in July, 1986 under the provisions of Inter-State Water Disputes Act, 1956 for constitution of a Tribunal. Therefore the water dispute relating to inter-State river Cauvery river valley thereof among the States of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Union Territory of Pondicherry was referred to the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) on June 2, 1990 under the Inter-State Water Disputes Act, 1956 for adjudication. The matter is subjudice before Cauvery Water Disputes Tirbunal (CWDT).

This information was given by the Minister of State for Water Resources, Shri Jai Prakash Narayan Yadav in written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.
