Granting of cabinet status to the Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes is under the consideration of the government. This was stated by the Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Smt. Meira Kumar while replying to supplementaries on grant of autonomy to NCSC in the Lok Sabha today. Smt. Kumar said that the National Commission for Scheduled Castes has been set up with specific duties and powers under Article 338 of the Constitution. It is, therefore, a constitutional body, she added. The Minister said that the Commission is vested with necessary powers to perform functions. She said the Government has positively considered 90 per cent of the recommendations of the 6th Report of the Commission.
