12 more central projects taken up for monitoring

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has taken up 12 more projects i.e. two from Steel and 10 from Telecom Sectors for monitoring in January this year. According to the latest Flash Report issued by the Project Monitoring Division of the Ministry on the progress of implementation of Central Sector Projects costing Rs.100 crore and above, 7 mega projects continued to show higher slippages during the month under report. The concerned Administrative ministries have been alerted to take appropriate remedial measures and check further slippages.

The two Projects taken up for monitoring during the month from Steel are, Technology Upgradation of a blast furnace of Steel Authority of India Ltd. and rebuilding of a coke oven battery also of SAIL. These projects costing Rs.107.41 crore and Rs.219.04 crore are due for completion during January 2006 and January 2007 with no cost escalation.

The 10 Telecom projects are, different phases of CMTS of BSNL in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Kerala, Punjab and Karnataka, the CMDA WLL equipment projects of MTNL in Mumbai and the MTNL GSM project Motorola and Expansion of GSM network. All the CMTS projects and the two CMDA WLL projects have been delayed and yet to be assigned new dates of commissioning. Though there has been no cost escalation in these projects but were to be completed by December 2004. The MTNL’s GSM project Motorola and the Expansion of GSM network have also not reported any cost escalation but were due for commissioning in January this year.
