The total production of finished steel during April 2004 - February 2005 has been provisionally estimated to be about 347.5 lakh tonnes as against the production of 336.16 lakh tonnes during the same period last year, showing an increase of 3.4 per cent. The apparent consumption of finished steel during 2004-February 2005 was 307.00 lakh tonnes which is higher by 6.3 per cent as compared to 288.71 lakh tonnes for the corresponding period last year.

The total production of pig iron from April 2004 to February –2005 has been estimated to 26.50 lakh tonnes as against the production of 35.36 lakh tonnes during the same period last year, showing a decrease of 25.1 per cent. The export of steel during the period has been estimated to be 35.36 lakh tonnes, showing a decrease of 25.11 per cent as compared to the corresponding period last year. The decrease in exports is indicative of the rise in domestic demand.

During the month of February 2005, the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) have achieved production of 1137,1054 and 987 thousand tonnes of hot metal, crude steel and saleable steel respectively, representing 95 %, 97% and 104% of respective targets. A special variety of steel (DMR-249) has been developed for the first time by SAIL for Indian Nevy Warships and first lot of about 600 tonnes was dispatched in February 2005. MOU for supply of gas has been signed between SAIL and GAIL. This will reduce SAIL’s dependence on imported coking coal for meeting its energy needs.
