The total production of Lignite during January 2005 by the Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited (NLC), a public sector unit of the Ministry of Coal has been estimated at 20.80 lakh tonnes which is more than the target of 20.25 lakh tonnes and 10.34 per cent more than the production of 18.86 lakh tonnes during the same month last year. The company during the month generated 1573.34 million units of power, 12.05 per cent more than the production of 1404.15 million units produced in January last year. It is 7.69 per cent more than the January target of 1461 million units. It exported 1339.91 million units during the month.
Geological reserves of lignite in the country have been estimated at around 35,636 million tonnes (MT). Out of the above 4,150 MT spread over 480 sq. km. is in the Neyveli Lignite fields in Cuddalore District of which around 2,360 MT have been proved.
