Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), a subordinate organization of the Ministry of Mines has adopted pro-active approach for compliance of Mineral Conservation & Development Rules (MCDR), 1988. During inspections, the mining lessees are offered field guidance for conservation of minerals, scientific mining and protection of environment so that the mining operations are carried out in accordance with provisions of MCDR, 1988. In cases of violations of less serious category, mining lessees are persuaded to comply the same. In case of more serious category of violations, prosecution cases are launched and there is provision for stringent penalty for continuous contravention of rules.
During the second and third quarters of this fiscal, IBM has inspected 1,367 cases and pointed out 1,445 violation cases. By its efforts, 603 violations have been rectified and 51 prosecutions have been launched.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
