Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) officials inspected Joda East Iron Ore Mine of M/s Tisco Ltd., Orissa in January 2005 and advised the company to construct garland drain and retaining wall to arrest wash offs of new dumps.
Accordingly the mine has complied to the IBM's report and has constructed 804.90 metre long and 1.2 metre high retaining wall with rock boulders. A garland drain of 1.5 metre width and 1.2 metre depth is also being constructed over entire length of the dumps and beyond. This will arrest possible wash off, which otherwise would have escaped down below causing pollution to the environment.
IBM also carried out bench scale beneficiation studies on rock phosphate from Beldih Apatite Mine, Purulia district, West Bengal and evolved a cheap and selective collector and production of SSP grade phosphate concentrate with about 75 per cent phosphate recovery. This is a significant achievement of IBM as it will help commercial exploitation of Beldih phosphate.
