Shri S. Jaipal Reddy, Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Culture today inaugurated the photo exhibition The Tsunami Challenge, organized by DAVP in collaboration with the Photo Division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Speaking on the occasion, Shri Reddy said that the exhibition would educate the public about the tragedy and also the relief and rehabilitation effort of the Government and others. The exhibition comprising more than 200 photographs portrays the death and destruction caused by the giant sea waves that struck the shores of eleven nations including India on December 26, 2004 and the massive relief and rehabilitation work that followed. About 2,30,000 lives were lost and millions rendered homeless in Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Maldives, Somalia and Tanzania. In India alone about 11,000 people perished. As the immensity of the disaster unfolded, the Government immediately launched the largest ever relief ever in the history of independent India in all the affected areas.
The exhibition at Delhi Public Library, Sarojini Nagar, New Delhi will be open to public from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. till March 21, 2005.
