Shri Vilas Muttemwar, Minister of State for Non-Conventional Energy Sources (Independent Charge) in a written reply informed the Lok Sabha today that his Ministry has formulated a scheme to increase number of Small Hydro Power (SHP) projects in the country. Under the scheme Ministry of Non Conventional & Energy Sources is giving subsidy for the installation of SHP projects (upto 25 MW station capacity) in both the government and private sectors. So far, 522 SHP projects aggregating 1705 MW have been set up and 205 SHP projects aggregating 479 MW are under implementation as on 28.2.2005. Shri Muttemwar further informed that of these, 66 projects have been set up in decentralized mode for electrification of remote villages which have electrified 104 villages, and 51 more such projects are under implementation for electrification of 156 villages. State-wise details are given below in Table-I & Table II respectively.
The highest numbers of projects already set up are in the State of Uttaranchal (75) with a capacity of 72.45 MW while Karnataka accounts for the highest capacity build up of 276.78 MW through 49 SHP projects. In terms of numbers Andhra Pradesh & Arunachal Pradesh with 57 each and with a capacity of 178. 81 MW & 33.80 MW respectively fall in the joint second place. Whereas, in terms of the highest capacity build up States of Madhya Pradesh with 207.08 MW and Andhra Pradesh with 178.81 MW are in the second and third position respectively.
SHP projects are usually grid connected and set up on rivers and canal drops, mostly in rural areas. Where potential exists, decentralized SHP projects are also being set up for electrification of remote villages.
