New Delhi, 22.06.2005

The Central Bureau of Investigation has been able to solve a sensational highway robbery-cum-murder case within five months of taking up the investigation. The investigative agency arrested 3 accused persons, Gurcharan Sharma @ Radhey, Kapil Dev @ Sunil and Vijay, all residents of Guragon District in Haryana on Monday for hijacking a truck and murdering its driver Naresh Kumar and Cleaner Azad Singh and looting of electronic items like DVD spare parts, speakers, remotes worth about Rs. 15 lakhs on 11.9.02. The accused were produced before the CBI Special Magistrate at Ambala yesterday who remanded the trio to 7 days CBI custody remand.

Truck No. HR - 46 A 8092 belonging to Shri Jai Prakash of Delhi had left Bangalore on 6.9.02, with goods for Hero Honda Company and DVD parts, speakers, remotes worth Rs. 15 lakh for Shiv Enterprises, Delhi. The truck reached Sidhrawli on 11.09.02 and after instructions from Shri Jai Prakash, the driver delivered one consignment of goods to Hero Honda Godown at Dharuhera, Haryana. The truck then drew petrol from a petrol pump at Bilaspur chowk and then took a turn to Pataudi road. Thereafter the truck was found abandoned in empty condition near Ahir College in Rewari on 15.09.02 and there was no sign of driver Naresh Kumar and cleaner Azad Singh. A case was registered on 17.09.2002 at PS City Rewari u/s 407 IPC on the complaint of Shri Anoop Khurana, Manager of Vijay Cargo Movers Ltd. that the driver and the cleaner of the truck had misappropriated the elctronic goods.

On the other hand, since her husband did not return home, Smt. Rajesh Rani, wife of driver Naresh Kumar of Rohtak filed a Criminal Miscellaneous Petition in 2004 in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The Court directed CBI to investigate the case and accordingly CBI registered the case on 20.1.05.

While tracing possible dealers in such stolen items in Delhi, the CBI finally picked up Gurcharan Sharma @ Radhey and questioned him. Though Radhey went on giving vague informations, finally investigation disclosed the involvement of Radhey and on the information given by him that he received the items from Sunil and Vijay, Vijay was picked up from Gurgaon and Sunil who was working as a driver in Tonk in Rajasthan was also picked up and both were questioned. During sustained interrogation, they dislclosed that they alongwith Radhey and two other accused Mahinder Singh of Gurgaon and Udaiveer Yadav of Mainpuri, UP hatched a criminal conspiracy to loot trucks plying at night on the route with costly goods and make money. In furtherance of the said criminal conspiracy they hired a godown at Khadipur Industrial Area, Gurgaon for stocking the looted items before they were sold. Simultaneously, they decided to run a dhaba on Pataudi road which ran well for about two months. On 11.9.02, truck No. HR - 46 A 8092 stopped at the dhaba at about 7.00 p.m. and driver Naresh Kumar and Cleaner Azad Singh had dinner there. After verifying from the driver about the goods in the truck accused Sunil gave Campose powder to accused Vijay who was preparing rotis to mix up with the rotis and give to the driver and cleaner. When the driver and the cleaner finished their food Vijay, Sunil and Mahinder Singh asked for a lift upto Gurgaon which was agreed to by the driver. Accordingly, they got into the truck whereas Udaiveer Yadav remained in the dhaba and Radhey followed the truck on his motor cycle. After they moved about 10 Kms. the driver and the cleaner felt drowsy and Sunil drove the truck. They stopped the truck after a driving for about ½ an hour to make sure that the driver and cleaner went into deep sleep and may not be able to resist. However, the cleaner suddenly started mumbling and tried to get up when Mahinder Singh and Vijay stabbed him. At that time driver Naresh Kumar also tried to wake up and he was also stabbed to death by Mahinder Singh and Vijay. Thereafter, they drove the truck to Sector 10 near Khadipur where they threw the dead bodies of the driver and cleaner into the gutter/nallah/drainage and drove the truck away to the godown they had hired earlier. The goods were disposed of by Radhey and all the accused shared the money. A few days later, they closed the dhaba. The dead bodies remained unidentifed and or untraced in the nallah.

The Gang had planned the crime meticulously leaving no clue about the murder and it was out of sustained investigative skills that the CBI was able to gather clues about the accused behind the highway robbery and gruesome murder. Efforts are on to trace the two absconding accused.
