The total production of finished steel during April, 2005 has been provisionally estimated to be about 30.00 lakh tonnes as against the production of 28.04 lakh tonnes during the same period last year showing an increase of 7%. The consumption of finished steel during April 2005 was estimated to be 25.75 lakh tonnes (prov.) which is higher by 4.8% as compared to 24.57 lakh tonnes for the corresponding period last year. The total production of pig iron has been estimated to be 2.75 lakh tonnes as against 2.23 lakh tonnes during the same period last year showing an increase of 23.3%. The consumption of pig iron during April 2005 was estimated to be 2.25 lakh tonnes which is higher by 6.13% as compared to 2.12 lakh tonnes during the corresponding period last year .
The export of steel during April 2005 has been estimated to be 4.00 lakh tonnes showing an increase of 14.28%, as compared to 3.50 lakh tonnes for the corresponding period last year.
In the beginning of April, 2005 domestic prices increased by approximately Rs.1500-5000 per tonne largely due to increase in prices of domestic inputs such as iron ore, scrap and coal. The international market, however, started softening from the middle of the month and thereafter domestic prices also showed indications of a slight decline.
