two day national conference on urban poverty alleviation at srinagar from tomorrow

Ministry of Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation is organizing a Two-day National Conference on Urban Poverty Alleviation at Srinagar from tomorrow. This conference will be attended by the Ministers/ Secretaries/ Commissioners from various States/UT governments dealing with the issue of urban poverty along with NGOs/ financial institutions and other experts active in the field of urban poverty.

Some of the major issues that are likely to be discussed in the conference are; review of strategies for urban poverty alleviation including issues relating to definition and trends of urban poverty, BPL survey and actual identification of BPL families, micro finance, conversion of other pro-urban poor programme, land tenure and basic services to urban poor, mobilization and empowerment of urban poor women through self help groups and Thrift and Credit societies and participation of NGOs and CBOs in poverty related issues.

The conference has assumed great significance in view of the UPA governments special focus on improving the lives of poor, disadvantaged citizens who are deprived of a large number of basic facilities and services. With about 67 million urban population below poverty line and nearly 62 million people living in urban slums and squatter settlements in cities are struggling with the challenge to provide basic services to these people.

This conference will be inaugurated by Kumari Selja, Minister of State for Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation and would be presided over by Shri Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
