Wednesday, June 29, 2005

Indian Railway Board has taken a policy decision to extend the trial period of an Electronic Freight Payment Gateway Pilot Project by another three months and permit Railways to extend this project to other customers in addition to various power-houses of different State Electricity Boards on demand. The pilot project was conceptualized by the Ministry of Railways and Ministry of Power in 2004. The project was launched in January 2005 in association with State Bank of India on East Central Railway in respect of coal consignments to Badarpur Thermal Power Station (BTPS). The project was reviewed in April 2005 and the progress found to be satisfactory.

The pilot project by and large has been successful except for very minor teething troubles and a model framework for e-payment scheme is being evolved for an enlarged coverage. The Electronic Freight Payment Scheme would help the Ministry of Railways to realize freight payments effectively and contain increase in outstanding.
