The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today approved the proposal for construction of a new 360 bed Super Speciality Block at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) Pondicherry. CCEA also gave its approval for augmenting the existing Speciality and Super-Speciality departments and for establishment of a Trauma Care Centre at a total cost of Rs.183.91 crore out of which Rs.157.84 crore will be spent on these projects ( including Rs.65.00 crore on the on-going project) during X Plan period and the remaining portion amounting to Rs.26.07 crore may spill over to the initial 6 months of XI Plan. CCEA also approved the proposal for getting the work executed on a turnkey basis through an agency selected on the basis of open competitive bidding.

Following benefits are expected to emerge from the above decisions:

(i) JIPMER will become a multi-disciplinary teaching/treatment Centre.

(ii) Increase in bed strength in Super-speciality & Speciality will reduce the waiting time.

(iii) Provide teaching/treatment facility in 15 super-speciality departments

(iv) Increase in students intake capacity in PG & Post doctoral courses.

(v) Comprehensive trauma care facility will reduce the fatality rates of road and other accidents.
