Thursday, June 30, 2005

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today decided to implement Rs.290 crore scheme for Integrated Development of the Leather Sector (IDLS) during the Tenth Five Year Plan period.

This decision will lead to technology upgradation and modernization of existing tanneries and units for footwear components and leather products resulting in productivity gains, right sizing of capacity, cost cutting and design development.

The Leather Industry occupies a prominent place in the Indian economy in view of its substantial export earnings, employment potential and growth. Leather and its products are amongst the top ten export earners for the country and accounted for US$2.1 billion out of the country’s total export of about US$62 billion in 2003-2004. The leather sector provides employment to about 2.5 million people, mainly from the weaker sections/minorities, of which about 30 per cent are women.
