rs 65.80 lakh provided for monsoon patrolling in tiger reserves

Based on discussion with the State Chief Wildlife Wardens and Field Directors under the Chairmanship of the Minister for Environment and Forests Thiru A. Raja, Central Assistance of Rs 65.80 lakh for monsoon patrolling has been sanctioned to 10 tiger reserves - Valmiki (Bihar), Tadoba-Andhari (Maharashtra), Indravati (Chhattisgarh), Corbett (Uttranchal), Dudhwa (U.P.), Ranthambhore (Rajasthan), Sariska (Rajasthan), Pakke (Arunachal Pradesh), Palamau (Jharkhand), and Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam (Andhra Pradesh).

Ranthambhore and Sariska have been given funding support for deployment of Home Guards and local people.

In the meeting of the Field Directors of the Tiger Reserves and the Chief Wildlife Wardens of the States held on 26th May 2005, the Minister of Environment and Forests, A. Raja said that red alert, apart from directives for monsoon patrolling, has been issued to all tiger reserves to prevent poaching during the rainy season when poachers are most active.

The special protection directives for the forthcoming monsoon include deployment of staff at sensitive points; daily recording of patrolling deployment of CRPF in reserves like Valmiki, Palamau, Simlipal, Manas, Indravati, Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam, Namdapha, Panna, Pench and Tadoba-Andhari. Authorities have been advised not to grant leave to their field staff during monsoon except under extraordinary circumstances.

The meeting of the Field Directors of the Tiger Reserves and the Chief Wildlife Wardens of the States was convened to discuss the measures that need to be taken for enhancing the management of Tiger Reserves in light of the final results of the independent expert monitoring of the reserves, the immediate steps necessary to address the problem of poaching during the monsoon, the implementation of enhanced methodology of tigers census, and other relevant issues.
