Exploration of minerals is an ongoing activity of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), a subordinate organisation of the Ministry of Mines. During its existence of more than 150 years it has contributed substantially to the enrichment of national mineral inventory. Some of the recent exploration finds of GSI are given below.



GOLD -- Dona east block, Kurnool Dist., Andra Pradesh (AP) and Bhukia, Banswara Dist. Rajasthan.



DIAMOND --- So far,73 Kimberlite pipes discovered. Besides Panna, pipes in Raipur District, Chhatisgarh and 16 pipes in Wajrakarur kimberlite field, Anathapur District, AP have been proved to be diamondiferous. Since field season 1999-2000 each year, one or two new pipes are being discovered in Karnataka/AP. This year one pipe TK-3 discovered in AP.



COPPER --- Baniwala ki Dhani, Sikar dist. and Dhani Basri, Dausa dist., Rajasthan



LEAD-- ZINC--Latio- Ka- Khera (East Block ) and ,Sindesar Khurd, Dariba- Bethumbi belt Rajasthan, Banskhapa- Pipariya and Muariya block,Betul dist, MP.



MANGANESE--- In Bolangir and Kendujhar dist, Orissa



IRON --Exploration being continued in Orissa.Resources yet to be established.


COAL&LIGNITE


COAL
Madhyapradesh (Singruli in Sohagpur Coal Field ) :Superior grade non coking coal at comparatively shallow level.

Chattisgarh ( Mand Raigarh ), Orissa (Talcher coal field ), W.B. (Bibhum coal field)--Power grade coal.

LIGNITE
In a virgin area Ramnad basin (Around bogalur Ramathapuram ), 14 m thick lignite has been found at a considerable depth opening up scope for exploration of a hitherto unexplored terrain.
