The Railways have achieved a record loading of 600 million tonnes during 2004-05. During the current year, Indian Railways has been loading 7 to 8 million tonnes more than last year every month. Despite this, on an average, 80 Box Covered Wagon (BCN) rakes have been lying stabled there by idling precious transport capacity. In order to utilize this spare capacity, Ministry of Railways is holding meetings with various user industries from 21st to 24th June, 2005 in Rail Bhawan.
During the meeting, a brainstorming was done on pricing of traffic for empty flow direction during peak & non-peak periods. Freight rebate on incremental traffic during non-peak period was also discussed. Suggestions of the representatives of various user industries were invited and discussed. Empty Flow Direction has been clearly defined in Railway terminology and user industries advised to come up with concrete suggestions in respect of freight rebate desired for incremental traffic offered by them. In addition to above, various other grievances of industries were also discussed.
