The President, Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam and The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, have condoled the passing away of the consumer rights activist, Shri H.D.Shourie.

In a condolence message to Shri Shourie’s son, the former Union Minister Shri Arun Shourie, the President has said, “I knew your father as a person who had a strong will to see that anything he took-up was taken to its logical conclusion. He was also a person who had the interest of the common man in mind in all the initiatives he took. Due to his tireless efforts and those of many others like him over a period of time, transparency has today become one of the major themes in the country.” The President has also conveyed his condolences to the other members of the bereaved family.

In a separate condolence message, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh said that Shri Shourie belonged to that rare breed of individuals who put the ‘public interest’ above everything else. He strove relentlessly to safeguard and promote the rights of consumers and used public interest litigation, advocacy and other tools imaginatively towards this end. He will remain an important symbol of organised intervention by civil society on issues that are of deep concern to the common man, the Prime Minister added.
