An estimated 40,000 Rkms of Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) as a whole has been planned on Indian Railways by 2008. Optical Fibre Cable has been laid on a total of 26,092 Rkms out of which electronics has been provided on 22,877 Rkms till 30th April, 2005.
On the golden quadrilateral and diagonals, OFC has been commissioned on 8487 Rkms, thereby covering 92.17% of such routes till 30th April, 2005.
OFC connectivity between four Metros – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai and four mini Metros – Ahmedabad, Pune, Secunderabad and Bangalore is now complete.
So far, 182 important cities and 1911 other stations have been connected on OFC.
