In order to improve the availability of wagons further, a number of measures have been initiated which includes focused attention on works related to improving the throughput, terminal improvement, electrification of sidings etc.
Besides the increase in axle load has also been permitted, which will not only help in movement of additional freight traffic but will result in reduction in unit cost of operation in the longer run.
Other initiatives which are planned during the current financial year include introduction of Wagon Investment Scheme, engine on load scheme, terminal incentive schemes for reduction of detention of wagons at terminals by making investments for improving infrastructure and introduction of mechanized loading/unloading. Some of the other measures in this direction which will help in improving wagon turn round include: introduction of specially formed closed circuit rakes which will have extended runs of 6000 hrs between two inspections for the purpose of maintenance, round the clock working in the goods terminals, electronic payment gateway for freight in order to improve the services, simplification of goods tariff, and revision of existing freight structure etc.
