The Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Culture, Shri S. Jaipal Reddy today announced that Doordarshan will be launching an Urdu channel. The satellite channel will become operational from January 1, 2006. It will have at least 7 hours of transmission everyday. The channel would have news as well as entertainment content.
Announcing this at a Press Conference, the Minister said that the annual budget for the software for the proposed channel will be Rs. 65.70 crores. During the current year, Rs. 20 crores will be provided for the purpose. The channel would start functioning from January 1, 2006 since procurement of men and material will take at least six months.
The Minister also announced the setting up of National Heritage Sites Commission. It will have the powers to monitor and issue directions in respect of monuments/sites which are not under the Ancient Monument and sites Remains Act, 1958 (AMASR Act)
The Commission would also review the policy of heritage and tender advice to the Government of India and to States in this regard. It can frame appropriate guidelines in the matter of preservation of monuments, study or cause to study any important matter in this regard and submit its report to the Government. It will also draw up tentative list for inscription in the world heritage list. The Commission can suggest to the Government appropriate amendments to the existing heritage legislations like the Ancient Monuments Sites and Remains, the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act etc.
