The Union Cabinet today gave its approval to undertake the design and development of Oceansat-2 Mission. It envisages building and launching a remote sensing satellite with a Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM) and a Ku-band Scatterometer as the payloads at a total estimated cost of Rs. 129.15 crore with a Foreign Exchange component of Rs. 86.00 crore.
With the realization of Oceansat-2 mission, India will have the wherewithal to cover many applications pertaining to ocean and meteorology. They include the fisheries, coastal zone mapping, ocean process studies, inputs for operational numerical weather prediction, ocean state forecasting, as well as for the tropical cyclone monitoring and prediction etc., are likely to get a further boost.
