exemption of jute units from n-e region from levy of cess

Thursday, June 23, 2005

The Union Cabinet today approved a proposal to introduce a Bill in the Parliament to amend the Jute Manufacturers Cess Act, 1983 empowering the Central Government to exempt the goods produced or exported by the jute manufacturing units located in the North Eastern Region from levy of cess for a specified period for accelerated economic growth of the States in the North Eastern region.

The exemption from cess will increase the viability of the jute mills in the North-Eastern region and this will help in the economic development of the region.
