The Union Minister for Rural Development, Dr. Raghuvansh Prasad Singh today released a Handbook on Rural Housing and Infrastructure brought out by National Housing Bank (NHB). Releasing the Handbook, the Minister emphasised on the increased role of the formal sector financial institutions in extending credit for Rural Housing programmes as there is a huge shortage of houses in the rural areas. On this occasion, the Minister recalled the pioneering work done by various Self-Help Groups and NGOs in improving the living conditions of the rural population especially the women.

The Handbook is a comprehensive document covering various aspects of rural housing including policy perspectives, technical and financial issues, cost-effective construction technologies, plans and estimates of cost. The Handbook captures the initiatives taken up by the Government since Independence and the present status on rural housing, indicating its shortage and the requirement for upgradation.
