Monday, June 20, 2005

A delegation of MPs and MLAs from Andhra Pradesh, led by the Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Culture, Shri S. Jaipal Reddy today met the Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Thiru T. R. Baalu, here.

Shri Reddy called for expeditious 4-laning of the Hyderabad-Vijayawada section of NH 9, which has become a virtual death trap due to very heavy traffic. Thiru Baalu informed Shri Reddy that the 240 km long Hyderabad-Vijayawada section of NH 9 has been approved by the present Government for 4-laning under the National Highways Development Project Phase-III. Thiru Baalu further conveyed that out of 240 km, about 40 km from Hyderabad side and about 40 km from Vijayawada side have already been 4-laned. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has engaged Consultants for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the remaining 176 km, he added. Thiru Baalu directed the senior NHAI officials present in the Meeting to ensure that the DPR is prepared and the work awarded at the earliest.

Further, Shri Reddy requested Thiru Baalu for construction of a bypass at Kodad town on H’bad- Vijayawada section of NH 9 as the stretch of NH 9 passing through the town has become very congested. He further said that a two-lane bypass has already been sanctioned for the town and the land too has been acquired. Thiru Baalu clarified that since the whole section would be developed to 4-lane, the bypass at Kodad too would be a 4-lane one. He directed the NHAI officials to ensure that the bypass is properly incorporated during preparation of DPR. He also requested the elected representatives to coordinate with the local landowners and district administration for expeditious land acquisition for the bypass.

Shri Reddy also requested for repair and upgradation of the Guest House in Kodad town that is located on the National Highway and now belongs to NHAI. Thiru Baalu assured Shri Reddy that the matter would be looked into. Thiru Baalu also directed that a senior NHAI official should regularly inform Shri Reddy regarding the progress of matters raised in today’s Meeting.
