A 13-member Parliamentary Goodwill Delegation led by Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Urban Development Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, had wide ranging discussions with the President of Guyana, Mr Bharrat Jagdeo, the Prime Minister, Mr. Samuel Hinds, Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr. Hari Ramkarran, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Reepu Daman Persaud, Minister of Foreign Trade and International Cooperation, Mr. Clement Rohee, and the Leader of Opposition, Mr. Robert Corbin, during the first leg of three day visit to Guyana from 31st May to 3rd June, 2005.
During his meeting with the President of Guyana, Shri Azad reiterated Indias willingness to provide economic support and collaboration for various ongoing projects and programmes of Guyana and added that India is keen to enlarge the scope of economic and technical cooperation between the two countries. In particular, he mentioned Indias contribution to the construction of a cricket ground of international standards ahead of the ICC World Cricket Cup in 2007.
The President of Guyana invited Indian private entrepreneurs to set up major infrastructure projects including hydropower generation plants. He also expressed a desire to obtain the services of software experts from India to spearhead the IT revolution in Guyana.
The Goodwill Delegation also visited the site of the cricket stadium, which is being financed by the Government of India. The stadium is expected to cost US$ 25 million of which six million is a grant and remaining an Exim bank concessional line of credit. Expressing satisfaction over the pace of work at the site, Shri Azad assured that the stadium would be completed by 31st October 2006, well before the ICC World Cup of 2007.
The 13-member Parliamentary Goodwill Delegation led by Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Urban Development Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad is currently on a 10-day tour to Guyana, Venezuela and Chile.
