The Review Report of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on the performance of the infrastructure sector during April, 2005, states that at the end of the month on all-India basis, 16 thermal power stations were having critical coal stock position i.e. less than 7 days of reserve. This is against 19 thermal stations which were having critical coal reserves the previous month. The stations included those at Ahmedabad, Wanakbori, Satpura, Korba, Nellore, Simhadri, Mettur, Barauni, Kahalgaon, Kolaghat, Bakreshwar, Durgapur, Farakka and Talcher. The super thermal power stations at Korba and Farakka, as well as Simhadri, Kahalgaon, Bakreshwar received more than 100% of their linkages but their position continued to be critical, due to higher consumption and low linkage.
However, the over all thermal generation during the month was 42.43 billion units i.e. 3.5% more than the target of 41 billion units. All regions except the Eastern, exceeded their target. The Eastern region recorded about 5% below target.
Meanwhile, the over all coal production during April was 30.50 million tonnes, marginally lower than the target of 30.55 million tonnes for the month. . The pithead stock of coal at the mines of the Coal India Limited was 22.05 million tonnes during April compared with the stock level of April, 2004, which was 3 million tonnes higher. The Coal India limited dispatched nearly 0.5 million tonnes of coaking coal to steel plants during the month, which was nearly 20% more than the previous April. Coal loading by the Coal India limited was also higher than the target of 21242 wagons per day. The Railways also exceeded the target for the month in revenue earning cargo traffic by moving over 52.59 million tonnes.
