The total coal production in the country in May 2005 is estimated at 30.67 million tonnes (MT) as against 28.58 MT in the same month last year. Out of this 477 working mines of Public Sector Coal India Limited (CIL) and its subsidiaries produced 26.37 MT, 67 mines of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), a joint Undertaking of Government of Andhra Pradesh and the Government of India, produced 2.73 MT and other 16 mines contributed 1.57 MT.

The total off-take of coal during the month was 31.21 MT against 31.05 MT during May 2004. Coal off-take in May by CIL was 26.89 MT, SCCL 2.77 MT and other mines 1.55 MT.
